Small Vulnerable Newborn Cohort
Small Vulnerable Newborn Cohort
Our initial, primary focus is improving outcomes for small vulnerable newborns (SVNs) through targeted, interdisciplinary research across multiple LRF Research Centers. By combining expertise in human milk science, neonatal health, and developmental biology, the GHMRC aims to generate actionable evidence that addresses the most urgent challenges faced by this high-risk population in the earliest stages of life. Stay tuned for more information, coming soon...

"I am particularly interested in the effects of breastfeeding on the mother in resource-poor settings. An infant born too small and/or too early will always benefit from receiving human milk. However, it is not known what producing milk costs a mother who is undernourished, repeatedly exposed to infections, and caring for other young children – or what would relieve that cost.
The Small Vulnerable Newborn Cohort is needed because the existing scientific literature was not designed to answer that question. The answer will tell us what specific support she should be offered, which would be a major contribution to global public health."
